Saccades guided by somatosensory stimuli
نویسندگان
چکیده
The accuracy of somatosensory saccades defined by proprioceptive cues with and without an additional tactile stimulus was investigated over a wide range of stimulus amplitudes in 16 normal subjects. The present results confirm that somatosensory saccades are less accurate and more variable than visual saccades. Accuracy was minimal for saccades directed to hand distances of 40-50 deg and increased for larger stimulus amplitudes. The additional application of a tactile cue on the fingertip was not found to influence the accuracy of somatosensory saccades significantly.

Proprioceptive guidance of saccades in eye-hand coordination.
The saccade generator updates memorized target representations for saccades during eye and head movements. Here, we tested if proprioceptive feedback from the arm can also update handheld object locations for saccades, and what intrinsic coordinate system(s) is used in this transformation. We measured radial saccades beginning from a central light-emitting diode to 16 target locations arranged ...
متن کاملMultimodal visual-somatosensory integration in saccade generation.
Neurophysiological studies have demonstrated multisensory interaction effects in the neural structures involved in saccade generation when visual, auditory or somatosensory stimuli are presented bimodally. Visual-auditory interaction effects have been demonstrated in numerous behavioural studies of saccades but little is known about interaction effects involving somatosensory stimuli. The prese...
متن کاملSaccades to somatosensory targets. I. behavioral characteristics.
1. We compared the properties of saccades to somatosensory and visual targets. This comparison provides insight into the translation of sensory signals coding target location in different sensory coordinate frameworks into motor commands of a common format. Vibrotactile stimuli were delivered to the hands, which were fixed in position and concealed beneath a barrier. Saccades of different direc...
متن کاملSaccades to somatosensory targets. II. motor convergence in primate superior colliculus.
1. We examined cells with saccade-related activity in the superior colliculus (SC) of monkeys performing saccades to both somatosensory and visual targets. Our goals were 1) to determine whether signals from these separate sensory systems have converged onto a common motor pathway by the level of the SC; 2) to determine the frame of reference of somatosensory saccade signals in the SC; and 3) t...
متن کاملPresaccadic discrimination of receptive field stimuli by area V4 neurons
Previous studies have shown that the visual responses of neurons in extrastriate area V4 are enhanced prior to saccadic eye movements that target receptive field (RF) stimuli. We used receiver-operator characteristic (ROC) analysis to quantify how well V4 neurons could discriminate stable RF stimuli targeted by visually-guided saccades or ignored during saccades elsewhere. We found that discrim...
